DOVER, DE — Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) PAC, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, announced its endorsement of Delaware representative-at-large Lisa Blunt Rochester for the U.S. Senate. A member of the Democratic Party, she is the first woman and first African American to represent Delaware in Congress.
With this endorsement, HRC will focus on activating local volunteers and turning out the states over 263,624 Equality Voters.
Representative Blunt Rochester has spent years breaking down barriers to access and equity for Delawareans and for herself. I commend my sister in the movement for steadily advancing equity and opportunity and representing the often thankless hard work Black women do nationwide to preserve our democracy and build a better tomorrow for those who come after us. As a widow, mother, grandmother, and public servant, Lisa knows the importance of providing economic security and greater opportunities for families.
In Representative Blunt Rochester, families will have a Delaware native to advocate for them in the halls of the U.S. Senate to secure fundamental freedoms and bring new opportunities to The First State. Representative Blunt Rochester serves as an Assistant Whip for House Leadership and sits on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. She is also a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and is a strong proponent of reforming our criminal justice system. As a member of the Bipartisan Heroin Task Force and lead on the Jobs Act, Blunt Rochester works for the health equity and economic advancement of all Delawareans. During her tenure in the US House of Representatives, Rochester has consistently scored high to perfect marks on HRC’s Congressional Scorecard, signifying that she supported key legislation that HRC sees as essential to promoting equality. If elected, she will only be the fourth Black woman to serve in the Senate.
Meanwhile, the Republican candidates vying for the chance to challenge Rochester in November’s elections are cut from the same MAGA cloth. While Rochester, a member of the Equality Caucus and original sponsor of the Equality Act, has made serving her constituents the top priority, her GOP opponents have no political history as electeds and offer no solutions to Delawareans’ pressing concerns. They are little more than acolytes of Trump’s regressive agenda.
